Introducing The Airborne Toxic Event (Mercury Recs)

With one self titled album, The Airborne Toxic Event presented themselves as an earnest sounding band with some great musicianship.  They frequently perform with orchestras and are slated to release a live DVD from the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Sept 7 US release).  Their first album was heralded by U2’s bassist Adam Clayton as a record he would be listening to for the rest of the year.  Rolling Stone named the band one of the “Top 25 bands on MySpace” and several other publications and radio stations (e.g. NPR) have given very positive responses.  The band has been seen live on Letterman, Conan OBrien, Leno, Kimmel, and Carson Daily.

Introducing Spoon (Merge Recs)

Spoon hails from Austin, TX by way of Portland, OR.  The band has found main stream success with albums Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Some great rock’n’roll, reached #10 on the Billboard 200, #1 on the Indepedent Album Chart).

The band’s name comes from 1970’s German band Can’s hit song “Spoon”.  It was the theme for the film Das Messer.

Their newest album Transference while strangely not quite as good as the last album, shows their fine ears and excellent musicianship.  Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, and company are excellent live.  Check out “Nobody Gets Me But You Do”.
