Flamingo by Brandon Flowers (Def Jam/Island Recs) Debuts at #1 in UK

Debuting in the US and Canada Tuesday Sept 14, 2010, Flamingo, has already knocked Katy Perry’s filthy sophomore album to #2 in the UK (apparently it was almost 2 to 1).  This makes Flowers’ fourth #1 album in the UK (following three studio albums by The Killers).

This puts Flowers in unusual company for artists gone solo who have released a #1 album in the UK.  INCLUDING: John Lennon & Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Phil Collins (Genesis), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Sting (The Police), Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel), Barry & Robin Gibb (Beegees)

HAVE NOT SUCCESSFULLY: Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townsend (The Who), David Lee Roth (Van Halen), Glenn Fray & Don Henley (The Eagles), Freddie Mercury (Queen), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Slash (Guns N Roses), Lou Reed (The Velvet Underground), Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), Andy Taylor (Duran Duran), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes)

In an attempt to market to the US, Flowers will appear on the Tonight Show (Jay Leno) on Monday night and Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night leading up to the album release. Next month he will also appear on The Late Late Show (Craig Ferguson).

Check out this footage from his appearance on UK talk show Alan Carr: Chatty Man (last week).

Brandon Flowers’ first performance in Las Vegas Hiltons’ Shimmer Lounge included a 10 song, 45 min set.  It was by all accounts an impressive performance.

Review

‘Crossfire’ by Brandon Flowers (Island/Def Jam Recs)

The first single from Brandon Flowers’ solo project is keeping with the fearless, bold, and beautiful nature of hearty singles already released by The Killers (Island/Def Jam Recs).  The music video features Academy Award winner Charlize Theron.

Flowers has insisted that the band will return and that this new album (coming Sept 2010) is merely the manifestation of a deep desire to keep making music and not break for a while.  That said, it’s no surprise that great iconic musicians attract the best sort of production.  ‘Flamingo’ has enlisted help from producers including Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers, Kylie Minogue), Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Train, Pearl Jam), and Daniel Lanios (U2, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson).  All of who will be featured performing instrumentation on the album.  The album also features a duet with Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis.  As for ‘Crossfire’, this is an awesome track which might be a bit more potent were it performed by The Killers in full once they return from hiatus.  Either way, we are loving the music from Flowers.
